Wealth
Wealth is defined as he value of all the property, possessions, and money that someone or something has (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Wealth is a factor that plays into many parts of life. One’s wealth can determine the many opportunities they will have in life. When one is a part of a wealthier class, they would be given more opportunities and choices in life than one who is less wealthier. Hedwig Lee of the University of Washington, states, “But of course the choices made by children and adolescents are strongly affected by the family and community environments in which they live” (Lee). Multiple barriers prevent people in impoverished areas from enjoying the many benefits that people have access to on a daily basis, and this has caused many people to take an unhealthier route when it comes to their daily lives, but it is one that they can afford. Lee states, “Families cannot usually afford to pay for organized children’s activities outside of school – and schools in impoverished areas are less likely to run sports or physical activity programs than schools with more resources” (Lee). As seen in the video below, there is a large disparity in the distribution of wealth in America.
